Do you need a tour in Lauterbrunnen?
Often not. Trains and cable cars run on fixed timetables, the Staubbach Falls are free and the Trümmelbach Falls sell their own tickets at the entrance. A tour makes sense when you want a guide, equipment, a transfer from a city or an activity such as paragliding.
This guide is independent and not connected to any railway, cable car or tourism office. Below you see the main types of tours, what they cost when you do the same trip on your own (2026, adult prices), and what to look for in the description before you book.

Types of tours and activities
Six kinds of bookings cover most of what visitors look for.
Schilthorn tickets
The cable car to Piz Gloria at 2,970 metres is the best-known trip in the valley. Some listings sell the ticket alone, others add a brunch or a Zvieri (afternoon snack), which costs extra. Brunch tickets start at CHF 125 from Stechelberg.
Schilthorn →Day trips from Interlaken
Interlaken Ost is only 22 minutes away by train, so most visitors come on their own. A guided day trip adds a guide, a fixed route and sometimes entry fees.
Getting to Lauterbrunnen →Day trips from Zurich and Lucerne
From Zurich HB the valley is from about 2 hours 24 minutes each way by train, so a day trip is long. A tour with transfer saves the planning but leaves less time in the valley. Check how many hours you actually spend there.
Train times →Paragliding
Tandem flights depend on wind and visibility. Operators may cancel at short notice, so ask how a cancelled flight is rebooked or refunded and keep a spare day in your plan.
Things to do →Via ferrata with a guide
The Mürren to Gimmelwald route is free to walk on your own. A guide lets you use the 60 metre zip line, which is only offered with a guide. The route is K3, 2.2 kilometres, about 3 hours.
Mürren via ferrata →Canyon and adventure activities nearby
Canyoning and similar adventure trips may be run in the wider Interlaken area, not in the valley itself. Always ask where the meeting point is, because it may be outside the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

What the same trip costs on your own
Adult prices in 2026. Use these to judge whether a tour price is fair for what it includes.
| Trip | Full price | With Half Fare Card | Swiss Travel Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schilthorn return from Stechelberg | CHF 115 | CHF 57.50 | CHF 45.70 |
| Schilthorn return from Mürren | CHF 91.40 | CHF 45.70 | CHF 45.70 |
| Stechelberg to Mürren return | CHF 23.60 | CHF 11.80 | Free |
| Lauterbrunnen to Mürren return | CHF 23.60 | CHF 11.80 | Free |
| Lauterbrunnen to Wengen return | CHF 14.40 | CHF 7.20 | Free |
| Trümmelbach Falls | CHF 18 | Not confirmed | Not confirmed |
The Berner Oberland Pass covers the whole Schilthorn network at no extra cost. The Jungfrau Travel Pass gives 20 percent off the Schilthorn cable car and covers the train from Interlaken Ost, the railway to Wengen, the Männlichen cable car and the train to Mürren. A tour that bundles a ticket you already hold through a pass is rarely good value.
What to check in "includes"
Two tours with the same title can cover very different things.
Which tickets are included
Does the price cover the cable car both ways, only the ascent, or the train to the valley? Trümmelbach entry (CHF 18) is often a separate payment.
Where it starts and ends
Check the meeting point and the return time. Some trips start in Interlaken, Zurich or Lucerne and others in Lauterbrunnen.
Equipment and guide
For a via ferrata, confirm harness, set, helmet and gloves. Without a guide, you can rent them from a sports shop in Mürren (Intersport).
Weather and cancellation
Find out who decides on a weather cancellation and whether you get a refund or a new date. This matters most for paragliding and the Schilthorn.
When to book ahead
Fixed-date activities fill first. Everything else you can usually buy on the day.
Guided via ferrata
The route is open from 1 June to 31 October, in good weather only. Book a guide early for summer weekends and keep a spare day.
Paragliding
Reserve ahead in the summer season and treat the date as flexible, because wind and visibility decide whether it flies.
Brunch or Zvieri at Piz Gloria
These tickets cost extra. Read the booking conditions for the date and time before you go up.
Lauberhorn weekend
The races in Wengen run from 15 to 17 January 2027. Book trips, trains and rooms for that weekend well in advance.
Lauterbrunnen tours: frequently asked questions
Are tours worth it in Lauterbrunnen?
If you start in Interlaken, usually not for transport alone, since the train takes 22 minutes. They are worth it for activities that need a guide or equipment.
Can you visit Lauterbrunnen on a day trip from Zurich?
Yes. The train takes from about 2 hours 24 minutes each way, so plan a full day and decide on one or two highlights, such as the Trümmelbach Falls or the Schilthorn.
Do I need to book Schilthorn tickets in advance?
The cable car runs all year, from Mürren and from Stechelberg. Reserve in advance only for brunch or Zvieri tickets, which cost extra.
Is the via ferrata in Mürren possible without a guide?
Yes, if you have experience and rent or bring a harness, set, helmet and gloves. The route is K3, very exposed and closed in bad weather. The zip line is only available with a guide.
Do passes make tours cheaper?
Passes lower the cost of the cable cars and trains, not of the guide. Compare the tour price with the pass price in the table above before you book.
