Ten waterfalls inside the mountain
The Trümmelbach Falls are a series of ten glacier waterfalls that run through a gorge inside the rock. A tunnel lift takes you up into the mountain, and from there you follow paths and stairs past the falls. The catchment area covers 24 square kilometres, and up to half of it is snow and ice on the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.
The site belongs to the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage area and is a federal inventory object. The name is a variant of Trommelbach, the drum brook, and refers to the noise. Plan about one hour for the visit.

How much water to expect
The flow follows the melting of snow and glacier ice, so the experience changes with the month.
At its peak the Trümmelbach carries up to 20,000 litres per second, according to Lauterbrunnen Tourism, and moves about 20,000 tonnes of debris a year. The two peaks come with the snowmelt from April to June and the glacier melt from June to September.
| Period | Flow |
|---|---|
| December to March | A trickle (the falls are closed) |
| Early April and October, after frost | A few dozen litres per second |
| April to June | Peak from snowmelt |
| June to September | Peak from glacier melt |
For the strongest water, visit between May and August. In April and in autumn the falls are still worth seeing, but expect much less volume.
